Trite but True Bonus: Don’t blindly follow any rule more than 85% of the time

Perhaps it goes without saying, but all the rules in this series need to be applied with intelligence and sensitivity. Use them where they fit. Adapt them to your purposes and situations. Creatively interpret them. If in doubt, test them and find alternative approaches. Here’s a quick recap of our trite-but-true advice:

  1. Research your subject.
  2. Decide what you want the image to say.
  3. Read the #%*@&!%$ manual.
  4. Shoot in the early morning or late afternoon.
  5. Be polite.
  6. Make the subject pop.
  7. Take lots of pictures.
  8. Keep a camera with you always
  9. Look, really look, through the viewfinder
  10. Capture the decisive moment.
  11. Be patient.
  12. Get closer.
